Deadly Work Injury in Farmington Hills Highlights Roadside Dangers
A devastating crash on Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills has left one Oakland County Road Commission worker dead and two others seriously injured. The work injury occurred Wednesday morning as the crew performed basin repairs near Misty Pines Drive, between 10 and 11 Mile Roads.
According to Farmington Hills police, a silver Ford Escape traveling southbound crossed over the median and struck the workers, who were stationed in the northbound lanes. One crew member died at the scene, while the other two were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Escape was also hospitalized.
A Safe Work Zone Turned Tragic
The road commission confirmed that the workers were properly equipped and had placed safety signals on both sides of their location. However, the vehicle approached from the west side of the work zone—an area not directly protected—raising serious questions about driver awareness and road safety.
“This is a heartbreaking day for the entire Road Commission family,” said Managing Director Dennis Kolar. “We are extremely saddened by the loss of one of our family members and the injury of two others.”
Craig Bryson, a spokesman for the road commission, echoed the sentiment: “Our biggest concern is supporting the families of these three employees.”
The crash is under investigation by the Farmington Hills Police Department. Anyone with information is urged to call the police command desk at (248) 871-2610.
