Michigan Hospitals Ranked in National Safety Report: What You Need to Know About Medical Mistakes
Understanding the Report: Hospital Safety Grades
Every year, thousands of patients enter hospitals expecting safe, competent care—but for some, a trip to the hospital ends in preventable harm. According to the latest Hospital Safety Grades released by The Leapfrog Group, medical mistakes remain a significant concern across the United States, including right here in Michigan.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a nationally respected benchmark that assigns letter grades (A through F) to hospitals based on their performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. These grades provide transparency and help patients make informed decisions about their healthcare.
Michigan’s Report Card
According to the Spring 2025 report, Michigan ranks 24th in the nation, with only 24 hospitals earning an “A” grade. In contrast, Utah ranked #1, with 60% of its hospitals receiving top marks, while North Dakota and Wyoming ranked at the bottom.
While some Michigan hospitals are excelling in patient safety, too many are still falling short—putting patients at risk of medical mistakes that can lead to serious harm or even death. In fact, Leapfrog notes that up to 250,000 Americans die every year from preventable hospital errors.
What Are Medical Mistakes?
Medical mistakes can include:
- Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis
- Surgical errors
- Medication errors
- Hospital-acquired infections
- Birth injuries
- Failure to monitor or respond to patient conditions
These are not minor oversights. They are serious events that can lead to life-altering injuries or fatalities—and they are often preventable.
