Waterford Crash Causes Closed Head Injury to 10-Year-Old

Child Critically Injured in Waterford Crash Involving Suspected Drugged Driving
A 10-year-old child is in critical condition after sustaining a serious head injury in a devastating crash in Waterford Township on Wednesday evening, according to the Oakland Press. The incident, which also injured four others, occurred around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Cass Lake Road and Highland Road.
According to the Waterford Police Department, the crash happened when a Ford Escape traveling southbound on Cass Lake Road was struck by a Jaguar turning left from northbound Cass Lake Road. Investigators say the 17-year-old Jaguar driver, a Waterford resident, ran a red light and collided with the Escape. Evidence of marijuana was found on the floorboard of the Jaguar, and authorities suspect impairment played a role. A blood analysis is pending.
The 10-year-old child, who was riding in the back seat of the Escape, was rushed to DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital with a life-threatening closed head injury—a type of traumatic brain injury that can have serious, lasting consequences, particularly for young victims. A 14-year-old seated next to the child sustained minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
Three others were hospitalized with moderate injuries, including the 19-year-old driver and 22-year-old front-seat passenger of the Escape, as well as the Jaguar driver.
At Giroux Pappas Trial Attorneys, we’ve seen firsthand the devastation that a closed head injury can bring to a child and their family. These injuries are often invisible at first, but the long-term impact can alter the course of a young person’s life—affecting cognitive development, personality, and future independence.
This heartbreaking case is a sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving—particularly when it involves young and inexperienced drivers. Marijuana and other substances can significantly impair judgment and reaction time, with tragic consequences.
Our thoughts are with the injured child and all those affected by this crash. We hope for a full and swift recovery. In the meantime, Waterford Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact Sgt. Nick Photiou at 248-618-6408.
If your family has been affected by a traumatic brain injury, we encourage you to learn more about closed head injuries and your rights under Michigan law.
Stay safe, stay alert, and never drive under the influence.
