Fatal Motorcycle Accident Claims Life in Orion Township
Motorcycle Rider Dies In Orion Township Accident
As the early spring weather arrives in Michigan, motorcycle enthusiasts are eager to get back on the road. However, with more riders out, the risk of accidents also increases—especially when car drivers fail to remain vigilant.
Tragically, a fatal Oakland County motorcycle accident occurred last night in Orion Township, claiming the life of 48-year-old Jennifer Marie Billington of Lake Orion Village. The crash happened around 8 p.m. on Lapeer Road at Morgan Hill Drive.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Billington was riding her 2012 Harley Davidson FLHX northbound on Lapeer Road when a 42-year-old Royal Oak man, driving a 2020 Dodge Caravan, failed to yield while entering the roadway from Morgan Hill Drive. The motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of the van, causing severe injuries to Billington.
Deputies and EMS personnel worked tirelessly to save her life, but sadly, she succumbed to her injuries at McLaren Oakland Hospital. Billington was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The driver of the van, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the incident.
The Importance of Motorcycle Awareness
This heartbreaking accident serves as a stark reminder that motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility. As the weather warms up, more motorcyclists take to the roads, but many drivers have yet to adjust to their presence.
Motorcyclists are vulnerable to serious injuries or death in crashes, even when wearing helmets and following traffic laws. One of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents is when drivers fail to yield or check for riders before making turns or pulling into traffic.
Look Twice. Save a Life.
Drivers, please remember: Look twice. Save a life. A simple extra glance before merging or turning can prevent a tragedy like this from happening. Motorcycles are smaller and harder to see than other vehicles, but they have the same rights to the road. Let’s work together to keep everyone safe this riding season.
Our thoughts are with Jennifer Marie Billington’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
