Multiple People Killed In Michigan Motorcycle Accidents
Saturday and Sunday were deadly days for Motorcycle Riders
Two tragic motorcycle accidents on Michigan roadways occurred this holiday weekend. On Saturday, July 6th a tragic motorcycle accident claimed the life of a 42-year-old Waterford Township man in Independence Township. On Sunday, a racing motorcycle crash in Livingston County killed 2.
A Motorcyclist Sideswiped a Vehicle
The 42-year-old man died Saturday after his motorcycle sideswiped one vehicle and was then struck by another, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. on Sashabaw Road near Fowler Drive.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the motorcyclist was driving a 2002 Honda CBR900 motorcycle southbound on Sashabaw Road when he crossed the center line and sideswiped a 2018 Jeep Compass, driven by a 27-year-old resident of Waterford Township, traveling northbound.
After colliding with the Jeep, the motorcyclist and his bike fell to the ground and were subsequently hit by a second northbound vehicle, a 2022 Ford Bronco driven by a 47-year-old resident of Independence Township.
The Waterford Township man, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the other vehicles were not injured. Police indicated that speed contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation.
Racing May Have Caused Motorcycle Accidents
Sunday July 7th, in Brighton a motorcycle accident killed a 20-year-old from South Lyon and a 64-year-old from Fenton.
According to authorities, a “Michigan State Police trooper saw two speeding motorcycles that appeared to be racing on Old US-23, just north of Grand River Avenue. Police said as the trooper attempted to turn around, he saw in his rear-view mirror one of the motorcycles crash into the passenger side of a southbound minivan turning left onto Loch Lomond Road.”
Local 4 News reported that while the motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, police said it was not strapped on and came off during the collision. A passenger in the van, a 64-year-old woman from Fenton, was also killed in the collision.
The other motorcycle did not stop and fled the scene. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Both accident investigations are ongoing.
