A tragic Farmington Hills motorcycle accident claimed the life of a 22-year-old man from West Bloomfield Township on Monday afternoon. The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. near the intersection of Northwestern Highway and 14 Mile Road—near the area of Orchard Lake and 14 Mile, which Michigan State Police have named the 5th most dangerous intersection in the state.
According to Farmington Hills police, the motorcyclist collided with a car, prompting multiple 911 calls from concerned witnesses. Officers arrived quickly and attempted lifesaving measures until medics transported the rider to Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. This devastating incident serves as a sobering reminder during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, observed every May. With warmer weather inviting more riders onto the roads, Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott urged both motorcyclists and drivers to prioritize safety: “We urge all riders to wear helmets, use reflective gear and obey speed limits. Drivers are urged to stay alert, check blind spots and avoid distractions.”
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month: Key Safety Tips for Riders and Drivers
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month—a time to spotlight the shared responsibility of motorcyclists and drivers to keep Michigan’s roads safe. Whether you’re riding or driving, here are essential safety tips to help prevent tragedies like the recent Farmington Hills motorcycle accident:
For Motorcyclists:
- Always wear a DOT-approved helmet and protective gear, including gloves, jackets, and boots.
- Use reflective clothing and gear, especially when riding at night or in low visibility.
- Ride within speed limits and adjust for road and weather conditions.
- Avoid lane splitting, which is illegal in Michigan and highly dangerous.
- Make yourself visible by using headlights and staying out of drivers’ blind spots.
For Drivers:
- Look twice at intersections—motorcycles can be harder to see.
- Check blind spots before changing lanes or turning.
- Give motorcycles a full lane—they need room to maneuver.
- Avoid distractions like texting or eating while driving.
- Be patient—motorcycles may need more time or space to respond to road hazards.
